MIQ IS NO MORE. THE NEW ZEALAND BORDERS ARE FINALLY OPEN.

Between 2020 and 2022, tens of thousands of Kiwis trying to return to Aotearoa New Zealand or travel abroad were grounded, unable to enter their own country.

Managed Isolation and Quarantine (MIQ) spaces were fully booked for months, and a lobby system required Kiwis to enter a lottery to try and return home.

Grounded Kiwis formed as an advocacy and support group in July 2021 to challenge the New Zealand Government's MIQ system and the impact this had on Kiwis ability to return home. In April 2022, the High Court found aspects of the MIQ system to be unlawful and in breach of the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1990 following a judicial review claim brought by Grounded Kiwis Group Incorporated.

Now that MIQ is no more and the New Zealand borders are fully open, Grounded Kiwis has officially wound up. We are in the process of turning this website into a legacy space with information about MIQ, stories of those impacted, and copies of our press releases, reports and resources.
